THAILAND NIGHTLIFE NEWSFLASH

Nana Plaza was suffering early closing due to police politics, but there is good news. Nana Plaza is open until at least 2:00am every night. Hooray!

NIGHTSEEING IN NANA - PART 2

Hi Guys, this week I continue talking about one of my favourite pubs in Bangkok…

Finnegan’s Pub is located opposite Rajah Hotel car park, just down past The Tavern in Soi Nana. This popular oasis is both Irish and Thai ran. Therefore, visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds, with a unique mixture of “Thairish” hospitality. The slightly unusual thing for an Irish Pub is that Finnegan’s is immaculately clean and tidy. This is where Thai presentation skills come into play. Finnegan’s has two levels and if you don’t fancy eating among the drinkers, there is a dining area upstairs. The girls are farang friendly, and the service is very efficient by Thai standards. In some establishments, guys have been known to grow beards whilst waiting for their order! This is not the case in Finnegan’s, because Gerry has his eye on the ball… As luck would have it, a gorgeous beer promo girl served me a pint of John Smith’s Bitter. With a John Smith’s in one hand and a dolly bird in the other, it was literally a bittersweet experience! (more…)

NIGHTSEEING IN NANA

Recently I have visited Finnegan’s Irish Pub down in Soi Nana. This past week Finnegan’s has done a brisk trade, while other pubs in the vicinity remain quiet. Admittedly, it is a small pub, but they have built up a good crowd of regulars. Although Finnegan’s attracts a healthy following, I think it is underrated in some ways. The excellent food alone should be a BIG draw. Check out the excellent menu, I think you will be impressed. Please say hello to Gerry, the friendly Irish owner. Cheers! (more…)

AFTER DARK ASIA – VOLUME 7

The next edition of the go-go girly magazine After Dark Asia will be on sale soon. The initial launch date was set for August 8th. However, the publisher’s estimation was a little premature. Thailand’s top glossy girly magazine will be on the shelves around the middle of this month. One of the partners is an image artist and the other is more of a piss artist! (I just couldn’t resist having a joke about good ole Bob). The photographer formerly worked for Penthouse Magazine, which explains the superb quality of the photos. This cover shot is one of the best I’ve seen. It is an excellent photo and the dolly birds are sensationally sensual. Copies are available from newsstands in Bangkok, but After Dark Asia is much more widely available across Pattaya. Check it out! (more…)

FRIDAY NIGHT UPDATE - BUDDHIST LENT

Asanha Bucha Day (July 17th) is deemed as a very important Buddhist holiday right across Thailand. In fact, some Thais tell me it is the most important Buddha Day. Today, Friday, July 18th it is Buddhist lent.  All devout Buddhists should “tham boon” (make merit) at their local “wat” (temple). Devout Buddhists should also pray and give offerings to monks, while abstaining from consuming alcohol. I wish you good luck. Chok dee kap!

BANGKOK BARS - Some bars will be closed tonight, but others are serving as normal.  Nana Plaza and the surrounding area is closed. For example, Bully’s Pub is open and they are serving booze. Woodstock Bar in Tonglor are also open. Therefore, I suggest that you try Soi Cowboy, Patpong and Bangkok pubs.

PATTAYA BARS - The beer bars and go-go bars across Pattaya will try to open tonight. However, I am not sure how many will be allowed to open. Have a look around, because some bars will definitely be serving alcohol. Cheers!

*BUDDHA DAY UPDATE - FRIDAY, JULY 18th*

PATTAYA - The bars in Pattaya will be closed on Thursday, July 17th. However, the good news is that the Pattaya bars will be open on Friday, July 18th. This year everybody I speak to is in a state of confusion. It’s Friday night in and so far few go-go bars are likely to open. Last night some locally connected go-go bars in Soi Diamond were open. We presume those same go-go bars will be open again tonight. Head down to Super Girls, Super Baby and possibly Diamond Go-Go Bar in Soi Diamond. No doubt a few beer bars will be discretely serving alcohol, but most go-go bars are likely to be closed tonight.

BANGKOK - Most of the bars in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok will be closed on July 17th and July 18th. Nana Plaza and bars around that area are definitely closed both Thursday and Friday. However, from the information I have received Patpong should be open this Friday night. Talk about an open and shut case!

FRIDAY NIGHT - A few pubs in Bangkok and Pattaya are open tonight. I know for a fact that Bully’s Pub are serving right now as normal. Cheers!

A GO-GO BAR FOR ALL SEASONS

AFTER DARK ASIAOpening a successful go-go bar is a lot harder than it looks. Prior to establishing a successful go-go bar, there are inevitably some important factors to consider. Today, we will look at two of the most important aspects. Firstly, acquiring the right location is the first priority. The three L’s of marketing are; location, location, location. As long as you are in the heart of the action, people can find easily you. I always sigh with disappointment, when a go-go bar name card has a detailed map on the back. We don’t want to waste time doing a map orientation exercise! After establishing a prime location, probably the next consideration is the size and design. You might be surprised how many people overlook these things. I dare say some naïve newcomers think that they just have to open the doors and the customers will arrive in droves.  It is not that simple, as any go-go bar boss will tell you. Great care and consideration should be taken in deciding on the size of the go-go bar. If it is too tiny, you will never be driving around in a brand new Mercedes Benz in this lifetime! You just cannot generate enough profit to lead that kind of lifestyle. Besides that who enjoys being boxed in? Those poky places are only fun for those who like the hands-on approach. (Call me old fashioned, but I thought hanky-panky was for the privacy of the hotel room). I find that most Westerners like to have their own personal space. Lord forbid if anyone invades that personal space. Small bars usually make small profits. (more…)

LOW SEASON HIGH TREASON

The frugal folks among us sometimes misinterpret the low season with regards to Thailand’s nightlife scene.  They automatically think that the low season is time to come out of social hibernation.  With a sigh of relief they will say, “At long last the tourist season is over.”  Meanwhile, us party animals enjoy Thailand’s vast nightlife scene all year round.  We are so pleased to merrily party 12 months of the year.  But alas, the frustratingly frugal folk think that low season becomes their territory.  This can and often does backfire on them.  Are you sitting comfortably?  Then let’s begin… (more…)

BIG MANGO BAR SOFT OPENING PARTY

BIG MANGO BAR - SOI NANA - BANGKOK

The Big Mango Bar have just announced that there will be a Soft Opening Party this Tuesday, June 3rd.  The reopening of the Big Mango was scheduled for Sunday, June 1st, but not surprisingly the Thai builders overran the proposed date.  The new Big Mango is located in the tiny alleyway between Jools Bar and The Tavern on Soi Nana.  Jools Bar is opposite the 7 ELEVEN near the Rajah Hotel car park.

NEW START FOR TRICKY RICKY AT BABY DOLLS

EVE - X ZONE GO-GO BAR - PATTAYAPattaya can be an unpredictable place at the best of times, but the hiring and firing of bar managers can happen at a whim.  Some Pattaya guys refer to one particular bar boss as Rambling Ricky!  Shortly after the partners of Sisterz Go-Go Bar decided to release Rambling Ricky, he was on the move again to secure another go-go bar.  Following a period of negotiations, he has now become the manager of Baby Dolls Go-Go Bar.  For those who are unsure, Baby Dolls is located in the increasingly popular Soi 15.  Ricky commented that although Baby Dolls has now changed ownership, it will continue to operate with the current format.  Rambling Ricky’s following now know where they can find him.  I know one thing for sure Tricky Ricky’s show concepts are hot stuff.  I hope Ricky settles in at Baby Dolls, and that things work out well for him.  Let’s face it, we are all getting dizzy trying to follow Rambling Roaming Ricky!  If you are in the neighbourhood, please visit Baby Dolls and pass on my regards to Ricky.  Cheers!

THAILAND’S CLIMATIC CHANGE AND ITS EFFECTS

YUI NAUGHT GIRLS GO-GO BAR - PATTAYA - AFTER DARK ASIARegarding the weather, there appears to be some serious climatic changes going on around the world.  Initially, I used to class the three traditional Thai seasons alongside the tourist seasons.  The ideal time to visit Thailand remains the cool season (akaat yen), which usually starts in November and goes through to the end of February.  The vast majority of foreign visitors flood Thailand during this period.  But, shortly after the flood of visitors, the drought begins.  In March, the hot season (akaat rorn) commences and can last into June.  Then there is an inconsistent period, where the seasons transcend from hot and dry to wet and humid.  The rainy season (akaat fun) normally starts some time in June or July and lasts until the end of October.  The transition from the hot season to the rainy season can cause quite a few locals to fall ill.  Also, the temperature change from the rainy season into the cool season sees many natives nursing coughs, colds and fevers.  After all these years living in Thailand, I now suffer the climate change almost as much as the Thai people do.
