Like Thailand, we have the occasional horror story whereby a tourist (or local) get hosed by the authorities. The most common involve being caught with an underage girl or boy, or being caught in possession of a controlled substance – usually in conjunction with a liaison with a freelancer. Here are two recent horror stories…
Well, the storms are over (for now) and we are into a more typical rainy season. The Philippines, in general, and Manila, in particular, suffer from a water shortage, so all the rains should help alleviate this crisis. From a business point of view, we have not seen a typical ‘slow’ season in either Angeles City or Subic. The occupancy rate in all three hotels is in the 70% range during the week and 100% on the weekends.
The other day I was reading some of the internet chat boards associated with the Angeles City nightlife scene, and I am constantly amazed at the bitching that goes on about prices. I have a funny feeling that the majority of these particular chat board contributors are Americans and, of course, the greenback has taken a hard hit over the last 18 months, whilst the Euro and the Canadian, and Australian dollar have fared very well. In addition the British pound is consistently very strong.
Many readers have asked about security in the Philippines. Overall, it is quite safe. There are places in most cities of the world that are not safe – same for Manila, Angeles City and the Subic area. Tourist destinations are particularly vulnerable. In the past year, there has been one questionable death in Angeles City and none in Subic. Tourists are more likely to be scammed than anything else. The most common is the, “Let’s play cards scam.”
Good day everyone. This week I want to make a few comparisons between Thailand and the Philippines. Last week we briefly talked about Angeles City. In today’s article I want to spend some time talking about another provincial (up country to the Thai residents) men’s playground – Olongapo. Olongapo is more often referred to as Subic Bay because it was the home of the US Naval Base by that name. Olongapo is about 125 km from Manila and 65 from Angeles City. (more…)
