Shark 2.0 opens Friday on Soi Cowboy after the popular go-go underwent a six-week facelift to make it look like its larger sister bar in Pattaya.
The bar’s bosses invited us for an exclusive sneak peek inside Shark 2.0 Thursday evening. Workers were still hammering, drilling and connecting wires, work that was expected to go late into the night. A thick layer of dust will be swept up Friday in a “big cleanup” and the sound system had yet to be tested, but everything is expected to be a go Nov. 7 on or after 8 p.m.
Shark 2.0 a Smaller Pattaya Copy
Since the opening of the giant Shark Pattaya a bit more than a year ago on Walking Street in Pattaya, the plan had been to make its Bangkok sister bar look the same, just smaller.
The first step in that plan was the Pattaya-esque frontage installed on Soi Cowboy in December. While it took a while to get the inside of Shark 2.0 done, the quality of the work is second to none.
Walking through the new LED video-covered entrance, you’d think you just arrived in Sin City. The blue and pink colors, the low-stage rimmed with pink LED, the stage-side tables and new stadium seating all look like they were transplanted from Pattaya.
There are differences, of course, Shark Pattaya is huge, with two long, low stages running the length of the bar and 10 tables between them. Shark 2.0 Bangkok has one stage and only 5 tables alongside.
Those tables were made possible by the all-new, lower and narrower stage. It’s thinner, but longer. Management also took out one row of stadium seating on the right side of the bar to allow for the tables, which are popular with groups.
As in Pattaya, the bar is at the back, with a large Shark logo above it.
Upstairs VIP
Unlike Pattaya, Shark 2.0 Bangkok has two floors. Upstairs will not open on Friday and, as the photo here shows, is still a worksite. The plan for upstairs will be a VIP lounge.
Although the sound was off during our visit, there’s no doubt that Shark 2.0 will be the best-sounding bar on Cowboy, just as Shark Pattaya is on Walking Street. Immersive and thumping, the sound is never too loud to have a conversation.
Best in Class Again
Shark was Soi Cowboy’s best bar for years and soon will be again.
It first opened on Soi Cowboy on Sept. 11, 2002, during a period when the Mandarin Group was expanding from Nana Plaza. With two floors and outside patio, Shark quickly became one of the Neon Alley’s anchors and marked its 23rd anniversary on Sept. 13 this year, just before renovation work began.
The upgrade had been planned for more than a year. Managers initially aimed to start early this year, then again in April, before postponing while the Mandarin in Nana Plaza underwent its own six-week refit.
Shark Soi Cowboy received interim improvements, including a new upstairs lounge in late 2024 and one of the first large-format LED signs on the soi.
The model for the Bangkok revamp was Shark Pattaya, which opened on Walking Street on Sept. 14, 2024, and quickly became the group’s flagship.
Mandarin’s September 2025 reopening provided another template. That project included a floor-level stage, new sofa seating, a redesigned backdrop modeled on a Chinese moon gate, and a full rebuild of the upstairs and downstairs.
The upgrade repositioned Mandarin as a VIP-focused venue and demonstrated the group’s willingness to modernize its oldest properties rather than retire them.
Together, the Pattaya overhaul, the Mandarin refit, and the staged improvements on Soi Cowboy formed the roadmap for the completed renovation to be unveiled at Shark 2.0 Friday.
