Renovation of Soi Cowboy’s Shark Go-Go Club begins Sept. 22 with the world-beating style of Shark Pattaya being brought to Bangkok.
The renovation is the latest step in the Mandarin Group’s strategy to modernize its Bangkok holdings with style nods to its Pattaya clubs. The original Mandarin Club reopens on Sept. 21 as Mandarin Go-Go VIP Club.
In the Mandarin renovation, management stripped the venue bare and rebuilt with a floor-level stage, new seating and a redesigned backdrop inspired by a traditional Chinese moon gate. The mirrored wall was replaced and the downstairs was given a complete facelift while work continues upstairs.
Shark Renovation Long Planned
Shark Go-Go Club opened on Soi Cowboy on Sept. 11, 2002, as part of the Mandarin Group’s expansion from Nana Plaza. With its two floors and outside patio, Shark quickly established itself as a major anchor at the Soi 23 end of the Neon Alley and helped set the tone for Cowboy’s rise as one of Bangkok’s neon nightlife corridors.
Shark Bangkok on Friday celebrated its 23rd anniversary, a day before Pattaya did the same. The party was themed a “thank you” with the plan to start a new chapter with the renovation on Monday.
The Soi Cowboy renovation has been long in planning. Management first floated an upgrade early this year, then postponed in April as the Mandarin project took priority. But, over the past couple of year, Shark Cowboy had seen incremental updates.
Late in 2024, there was a renovation of the upstairs lounge and then installation of one of Soi Cowboy’s first large-format LED signs, a slightly smaller copy of Shark Pattaya’s frontage. These changes were always intended as steps in a larger program: first upstairs, then signage, now the full downstairs renovation.
Since its first year, Shark has had a typical go-go layout with two rows of stadium seating and a large, raised stage in the middle, with bar in the back. Shark Pattaya changed all that, and while Soi Cowboy is smaller, the same layout model will be used.
Shark Pattaya’s Modern Design
Shark Pattaya’s layout features two parallel low stages with table seating between them, flanked on both sides by rows of wide upholstered sofas with ample legroom. At the rear, a large sofa-cubicle VIP area overlooks the stages, while two additional VIP sections provide private space for groups. A separate stage behind the main VIP section and a bar fitted with a large illuminated Shark sign round out the design.
In July, Stickman Bangkok wrote that Shark Pattaya was “the best gogo bar of its type in either Pattaya or Bangkok,” praising the layout, service, atmosphere, and reasonable drinks prices. He added that the bar’s overhaul “set a new benchmark for gogo bars nationwide.”
The timeline for the renovation has not been disclosed, but the project is expected to follow the group’s recent Mandarin renovation, which required six weeks. That means the new Shark Cowboy would debut in late October or November.
