It may be a dry weekend in Thailand, but the eating will be good (and cheap) at The Old English Bangkok, which is running two days of specials for Buddhist Lent holiday.
Bars close at midnight Friday July 19 and (technically) unable to serve alcohol until midnight Sunday. Smart people will be using the Asanha Bucha-Khao Phansa double holiday to get out of Bangkok. But those staying in town can console themselves with great deals at The Old English in Thonglor.
Start Saturday (and Sunday) with The Old English’s breakfasts, which come in every size from small to gluttonous. Buy one and you’ll get a second one free. Good for your partner. (Or your fat self.)

Buddhist Holidays Bummer for Tourists
Of course, all the tourists in town are about to get a letdown, with Buddhist Lent beginning, alcohol sales prohibited and Thailand bars closed on the weekend. Soi 4 beer bars again will push the limits and reopen around 10 p.m. Sunday, hiding beer in paper cups.
There was also talk down Pattaya way that bars in Sin City might open normally on Sunday. That’s likely wishful thinking, however.
Khao Phansa marks the start of Buddhist Lent or the traditional “rains retreat” of monks in Thailand who, in the old days, would retreat into their temples during rainy season to avoid trampling rice crops while seeking alms.
Auk Phansa will mark the end of Buddhist Lent in October and will be the next dry day in Thailand.
