May Full Moon Party Fervor Returns to Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy

May Full Moon Party

Bangkok’s redlight districts will celebrate their May Full Moon Party Monday, a day after many bars were allowed to open for the first time on a Buddhist holiday.

Nana Plaza’s May Full Moon Party

Tycoon aGoGo, located in Nana Plaza, headlines the May Full Moon Party circuit with its signature body-painting activities. The event, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., invites customers and performers alike to partake in fluorescent body art.

Tycoon’s previous Full Moon events have been covered extensively, emphasizing the bar’s creative themes and lively atmosphere. Past events at Tycoon have featured similar body painting experiences.

Elsewhere in Nana Plaza, Red Dragon Club & Lounge and Mandarin Club’s May Full Moon Party will follow the “Showgirls” theme, incorporating body paint and glow sticks to enhance the festive mood.

Both clubs will open at 8 p.m., with special dance performances scheduled shortly after 10 p.m.

These clubs have regularly hosted Full Moon Parties, frequently receiving attention for their themed decorations and entertainment.

On Soi Cowboy, Shark Go-Go Club joins the May Full Moon Party party, embracing the fluorescent theme with body-painted performers and glow stick accessories.

Shark Go-Go’s party also begins at 8 p.m., featuring dance shows starting around 10 p.m. Like its Nana Plaza counterparts,

Thailand’s Full Moon Party Tradition

Thailand’s Full Moon Party tradition originated on the island of Koh Phangan, becoming internationally famous for its beachside celebrations.

Initially starting as a small gathering in the 1980s, the event has grown significantly, drawing thousands of tourists each month. Bangkok’s urban interpretation, particularly within Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, adapts this concept, bringing a version of the coastal celebration to the city’s nightlife hubs.

Full Moon Party After a Boozy Holiday

This year’s May Full Moon Party event is especially notable due to this past week’s legislative changes allowing many bars to serve alcohol during major Buddhist holidays, such as Visakha Bucha Day, on May 11.

Historically, nightlife venues were required to close during these religious holidays, but revised regulations have allowed designated venues to remain open. Despite this relaxation, Nana Plaza bars observed the traditional closure, marking the Full Moon Party as their significant reopening event after the holiday.

Reactions to the recent alcohol law amendments have been mixed. Nightlife businesses, particularly in Pattaya and other tourist-heavy areas, have welcomed the change as beneficial for tourism and local commerce. Conversely, some politicians and public health advocates have expressed concern about potential negative social impacts. The varying opinions on these regulatory changes underscore the ongoing debate about balancing tourism growth with cultural and health considerations.

Bars such as Tycoon aGoGo, Red Dragon Club, Mandarin Club, and Shark Go-Go Club anticipate strong attendance for their May Full Moon Party celebrations, viewing these events as opportunities to showcase their entertainment offerings and attract both local and international patrons.

The combination of themed entertainment, neon body paint, and glow sticks aligns with the global recognition of Thailand’s nightlife culture, highlighting Bangkok’s unique interpretation of the internationally celebrated Full Moon tradition.

In preparation for the Full Moon Party, bar management across Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are enhancing staffing and logistics to accommodate anticipated high attendance.

Patrons attending the events on May 12 can expect organized, vibrant celebrations inspired by the original Koh Phangan Full Moon Parties, adapted to the energetic urban environment of Bangkok.
