Thailand Bans Smoking On 20 Beaches

PATONG BEACH PHUKET THAILAND 2017

Butt Out Or Go To Jail

Thailand has banned smoking on 20 of its popular tourist beaches. While the move seems smart, the draconian punishments are extremely harsh. Offenders caught smoking could face one year in prison, and/or a maximum fine of 100,000 baht.

I agree in theory with a ban on smoking to preserve Thailand’s beaches, but realistically, littering of any kind should be banned.

What about the rest of the litter bugs? The endless streams of plastic cups, plastic bags, discarded food cartons, sweet wrappers, etc.

This particularly applies to the beaches in Pattaya, which have become badly polluted following decades of neglect. The Thai authorities have partly dealt with the pollution problem, but they need to address the whole issue.
