Hi Guys, I have some good news for you. This week I will start to introduce some new images. I am sure the eagle-eyed among you will spot those in a split second. New photographs are being introduced as we speak. Whoopee!
AFTER DARK ASIA MAGAZINE VOLUME #5
Just when you think everything is going smoothly, something unexpected happens. Welcome to Amazing Thailand! After Dark Asia Volume 5 was due to be on the newsstands last week. However, the printers made several critical errors and the magazine had to be reprinted. Thankfully, the latest edition of After Dark Asia is now on the numerous newsstands around Bangkok and Pattaya. One of the producers of After Dark Asia told me that running a girly bar would be easier than running a girly magazine in Thailand. Enjoy!
AFTER DARK ASIA DANCE CONTEST UPDATE
Following careful consideration, the After Dark Asia Dance Contest has been put back one week. This is to allow the organisers more time to prepare for the event. It will still be held in Hammer Disco, but the new date is January 22nd. With the event starting at the strange time of 1:00am, it is the morning of January 23rd. Are you confused enough yet?
THAILAND ARE SET TO INTRODUCE A SMOKING BAN
The Thai government are talking about a public smoking ban being introduced on February 11th, 2008. This would mean that all bars, discos, nightclubs and restaurants would have to abide by the new law. Finally, it appears that the Thais want to follow the western world’s lead. It is probably a good thing for all concerned, but we cannot be sure what will happen. For instance, will the smoking ban be enforced nationwide? With Thailand being Thailand, we will never know for sure until the moment arrives. Sorry that I cannot be clearer than that, but in Amazing Thailand, even the natives are often left clueless!
But, in saying that they do sound serious about this issue. Why should non-smokers have to constantly inhale cigarette and cigar smoke? Personally speaking, I will welcome the public smoking ban and hope that it is fully enforced by the Thai authorities.
POSSIBLE 20,000 BAHT FINE FOR ESTABLISHMENTS
The Thai authorities are warning that offenders will be fined 2,000 baht, but the establishment can be fined 20,000 Baht. Whoa! That is a serious amount of cash. Mind you, as I say, let us see what happens before we jump to conclusions. As always, I will do my best to keep you informed.
THAI BAHT REACHES A 10-YEAR HIGH AGAINST US DOLLAR
The future continues to look extremely bleak for the US Dollar, as the Thai baht reaches an incredible 10-year high. The weakening greenback leaves many people very concerned. There are some unhappy Americans in Thailand wondering what the hell is happening. Some Americans are moaning and groaning, and they are wrongly blaming the Thais. One American tried to tell me it was the bargirls’ fault for charging too much. On this occasion, it was clearly a case of blaming the wrong Bush!
TOP OF THE POPS
The tremendously talented Thai pop rock star Sek Loso, will be performing live in Hillary 2 Bar in Soi Nana. Hillary 2 Bar is situated just down past Dynasty Inn, on the left-hand side. It is directly opposite Hanrahan’s Irish Pub. The concert will be held on Saturday, February 2nd. Due to the popularity of “Hi-So Loso”, it is advisable to book tickets prior to the evening. You can enquire about tickets in Hillary Bar (Soi Nana or Sukhumvit, Soi 11), Hillary 2 Bar, Morning Night Bar, or Spice Club (Ambassador Hotel, Sukhumvit, Soi 11). Loso, who has appeared live with Thai pop legend Bird, has a large farang following. Khun Sek is aware of this and even sings a few songs in English.
THAILAND GO-GO BAR, DISCO AND CLUB CLOSING TIMES
I have not given an update about the entertainment establishment closing times across Thailand for a while. Here is a brief summary:-
BANGKOK — Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy close between 2:00am and 2:30am nightly, and Patpong close between 2:00am and 3:00am. Angels Disco (Nana Hotel Disco) closes at 3:00am. The cluster of bars around the Soi Nana/Soi 6 junction is open until 5:00am-6:00am. In addition, in Soi Nana the rooftop garden bar in Sin Club is open again for a nightcap. The ever-popular Spice Club located in the basement of Ambassador Hotel on Sukhumvit, Soi 11 is also open until 5:00am-6:00am. A truly pulsating place, full of bargirls who want to shake their stuff. A very trendy nightclub is The Tunnel, which is located in Luang Suan Soi 5. Monday to Thursday there is a 300 Baht entrance charge, but this does include one drink of your choice. Friday to Sunday the entrance charge increases to 500 Baht, but this includes two drinks of your choice. Currently, The Tunnel is open until 6:00am on most nights. Occasionally the boys in brown close The Tunnel earlier, but fortunately this does not happen very often.
Hollywood Disco in the Ratchada area is open until about 4:00am on Fridays and Saturdays. Hollywood has mostly a Thai clientele, but farangs are welcome.
*Remember that some Bangkok nightclubs require original ID, or entrance will be refused. However, this only applies to the more upmarket nightclubs.*
PATTAYA — Numerous beer bars are open 24 hours with two, or three shifts of staff. However, in remote areas too far away from Walking Street, these types of bars see very little trade. The selection of bars all clustered together is just too vast to allow them all to do a decent amount of trade. But, for the “Billy Bunters” (punters) there is a great selection of bars for those on a booze cruise!
The go-go bars in Pattaya can open as late as 3:00am – 4:00am, but some will close beforehand, due to lack of customers and/or bargirls. The great thing about Pleasure Playground is that there are varieties of late night discos and clubs that are open until dawn. Here are the hot spots on Walking Street – Lucifer’s, Tony’s, Marine Disco and Secrets Club (Soi 14). Hammer Disco is open until dawn and is situated between Soi 14 and Soi Diamond on the upper level. Insomnia Nightclub in Soi Marine Plaza also opens until 6:00am, and *please note* that Insomnia is a popular late night hang out for bargirls. Fashion Club is the new name for what was formerly Slim. The refurbished, upscale Fashion Club is located between Soi 4 and Soi 6 in North Pattaya. Fashion Club is geared more to an upmarket Asian clientele, but it is a classy club. To see how classy Fashion Club is, just look at some of the cars in the car park! Fashion Club is Russian owned.
PIT STOP FOR THE LAST MAN STANDING
One of the last pit stops for some late night revellers is JP Bar outside of the Blues Factory on Walking Street. If you are still standing, JP Bar is open until 9:00am.
“I thought I was a terrific lover until I found out my girlfriend suffers from acute asthma!” (Dave The Rave 2008).
SUBWAY SANDWICH SPECIAL
The popular and efficiently run Subway sandwich franchise, still offer their daily super saver. It is an ideal meal, where you can eat in, or takeaway. Subway is good for the more health conscious among us, and great value-for-money too!
Sub Of The Day — The 6-inch daily special is ONLY 69 Baht!
Once again, we peak through the bamboo curtain into the neon jungle of Nana Plaza…
After a white-knuckle ride as pillion passenger on a motorbike taxi, I arrived into Soi Nana a little shaken but not stirred. The traffic is more intense in the late afternoon and the motorbike taxi boy was erratically swerving in and out of several streams of traffic. Well anyway, at least I arrived in one piece! It was the afternoon of the New Year Staff Meeting in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar. Yes, surprisingly, some go-go bars still hold monthly staff meetings. Perhaps some of you were not aware that we even hold staff meetings. The purpose is to inform the staff of any important events, any changes being introduced, train the staff via verbal instructions, and to reinforce the bar rules wherever necessary. The meeting is spiced up with Thai humour, but the staff meetings do tend to drag on. I just wonder how much is absorbed by those with limited attention spans. In fact, following several hours of instructions, do the bargirls remember anything at all? Anyway, shut up Dave The Rave, because the meeting has started…
Finally, it turned out to be a great meeting because both Bosses congratulated everybody on doing a superb job throughout 2007. And, why wouldn’t they? Because, it was Angelwitch’s most successful year on record. Then, the good part started. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY! It was lucky draw time. Matt and Khun Pim, very generously handed out a lot of cash in a special New Year lottery draw. When the top prize was handed out, two members of staff were lucky enough to receive 10,000 baht each. Furthermore, several runners up received 8,000 Baht and 5,000 Baht each. As you can imagine, there was a room full of excited Thais, eagerly awaiting the numbers to be called out. The winners were like excited children on Christmas Day. Bless them!
After the lucky draw was over it was time to party. Several bottles of whisky were handed out to the staff and the party started. Not every go-go bar owner in Nana Plaza is as mean-spirited as you may assume. If you show your appreciation to your staff, they will usually stay loyal to your establishment. The moral of the story is that some bar owners do show their appreciation to their team. It comes as no surprise that the most generous go-go bar owners are nearly always the most successful.
BAR CODE — NO MEN ON STAGE
We are fully aware that it is the “silly season” in Thailand and you do get some right buffoons. However, a strict rule in any (sensible) go-go bar is, “NO MEN ON STAGE!” Now, how difficult is that to understand? But, as you know, there is always one idiot. What heterosexual male in their right mind wants to look at a farang man dancing, or stripping on a go-go stage? It should be a no brainer, but unfortunately, it does happen from time to time. Furthermore, there is the safety factor to consider. Some stages are quite high and a drunken farang could seriously injure himself, or others in a nasty fall. What if a paralytic farang sends a go-go dancer flying off the stage? You should NEVER EVER encourage this kind of behaviour. Once again, if a newcomer arrives, please remind them of the Go-Go Guru’s Bar Code.
BAR CODE – NO PHOTOS OR VIDEOS IN THE GO-GO BARS
I know I have already covered this subject. However, the tourists are arriving in droves and the “silly season” is well and truly underway. More and more people insist on trying to take photos in the go-go bars. The amount of times customers are trying to take photos is getting far too frequent. Sad to say, that in my 10 years experience as the Go-Go Guru, I have seen some very nasty incidents. The Thais see this as a serious issue and therefore, it is not worth the hassle.
The modern menace for the go-go bars is the mobile phone. Some of the new cell phones have super little cameras. While we are on the subject of mobile phones, do not hold them up high. This will only make the Thais suspect that you are taking a photo, or shooting video footage. Do not take any photos, or videos of the go-go dancers. To play it safe, do not take any photos, or videos inside the go-go bars at all. The only exception to the rule is if you get permission from the management.
I am aware that many of you know this, but some people just cannot help themselves. Also, do not try to film, or photograph Thai girls back in your room, unless permission from the girl has been given. Some farangs are playing with fire if they think that it is fine to photograph, or film any Thai woman without her consent. Many bargirls are “connected” and your life may never be the same if you abuse a Thai woman. Whoever you may think you are remember that you are on foreign soil.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS — LIFE’S A FUNNY OLD GAME
The Irish Army have finally landed in the Gulf. News reports say that the people of Mexico are completely baffled.
The English Premier League Champions Manchester United absolutely thrashed Newcastle United. All of the goals were scored in the second half, which resulted in a 6-0 annihilation. Newcastle United do not need a manager, they need a bloody miracle!
The manager of Liverpool Football Club was asked why he changes his team so often. Mr. Benitez replied, “To keep the burglars on their toes.”
NANA PLAZA NEWS – PRETTY LADY UPDATE
Pretty Lady Go-Go Bar is located on the ground level in Nana Plaza, right next to Voodoo Go-Go Bar. Happy Hour runs from when the doors open until 9:00pm. During Happy Hour, drinks are ONLY 80 Baht. I think this is a very good drinks deal for a go-go bar in Nana Plaza.
Regarding the bar itself, it could definitely do with some modifications. The mirror tabletop is damaged and brown masking tape covers the cracked areas. The music was a good mixture of pop and rock, but the speakers were churning out sheer distortion. The sound system is well past its sell by date. In fact, I think they still have the same speakers from when Dave The Rave was running Pretty Lady 10 years ago.
The go-go dancers wear tartan coloured outfits. They comprise of a top and a mini skirt. There is plenty of flirting and flashing going on down below. At one point, I thought that one of the go-go dancers was going to sit on my friend’s head. It was a narrow escape for the Dirty Doctor! Mind you, he did seem rather engrossed with the view. I spotted about three cute dolly birds, but the quantity and quality of the line-up has decreased since I last visited. I think Pretty Lady needs some improvements, but some of the “naughty but nice” go-go dancers, still make it worth visiting. Good Happy Hours are a rarity in Nana Plaza nowadays, so this is an added bonus for Pretty Lady.
