 SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Hold tight riders, here we go! This week I am proud to announce the 2nd Anniversary of this Thailand nightlife website. There was no “Thailand Night Fever” on Wednesday, because I wanted to post on the actual date of the 2nd Anniversary. Rather pedantic you may think, but I’m a sentimental old fool! Incidentally, I am very pleased to say that last month was the most web traffic my website has ever received. You could say it is a most welcomed birthday gift. In just a couple of years, it’s incredible how popular www.DaveTheRaveBangkok.com has become. This is especially true, considering it all started out as a Thailand nightlife newsletter sent to a few friends.

I think it’s quite ironic to be celebrating, when many Thailand nightlife reporters have quit. During this past 2 years, strings of guys have gotten themselves blogged down. Furthermore, some of these fly-by-nights only lasted a few months. A couple of the latest victims include Werewolf and Pattaya Ghost. Running a website is a marathon race, not a 100-metre sprint! The cyberspace sprinters burn out after just a few virtual laps, but the marathon men just keep going and going. Excluding the chat boards, Thailand nightlife reporters are becoming a dying breed. Even long-term Thailand nightlife writers have taken several steps backwards by publishing much less frequently. Even in my wildest dreams, I never thought I would see myself as a rare species! Admittedly, 2 years does not sound like a long time. But, when we talk about venturing out into cyberspace, it becomes a longer period in cyberspace light years. Without getting too nerdish, I think you know what I mean! I would like to thank you all for your support and your loyalty. In particular, special thanks go out to John K, Mr Ed, Mr Gee (Graham), Sanook Shaun, Nong Nate and the enigmatic Stickman. These people have been key figures in the success of this popular website. I salute you guys!

And so, where will Dave The Rave’s cyberspacecraft lead us to next? We guys, we will continue to venture out into cyberspace. Prepare to explore Bangkok and beyond…

LOY KRATHONG — FLOAT YOUR BOAT

This is a reminder for the forthcoming Loy Krathong festival on November 12th. It is one of the most romantic festivals in the Eastern world.

THAILAND’S ENTERTAINMENT VENUES TO CLOSE FOR ROYAL FUNERAL

Out of respect to the Thai Royal Family, entertainment venues across Thailand are requested to close for 3 days. The dates are November 14th, 15th and 16th. If you are unaware, it is the cremation of HM King’s sister. In a Buddhist country like Thailand, it would be wise to conform to this request. Incidentally, even Thai TV channels, have been told to show “appropriate” programmes. Another request is that the Thai people wear black during this period.

SOI NANA – FINNEGAN’S IRISH PUB

Finnegan’s Irish Pub has reintroduced the cerebral challenge. Yep, you guessed it, Finnegan’s Quiz Night has returned. For the brain boxes among you, Finnegan’s Quiz Night is every Wednesday. Start time is 8:30-9:00pm. The Quizmasters are Jazzy Jez and Lovely Laura… All sing together lads, “Tell Laura I love her.”

THE PICKLED LIVER PUB QUIZ

While we are on the subject, there is a Pub Quiz every Thursday in The Pickled Liver Pub. Start time is 8:00pm and the Pub Quiz is free. The Pickled Liver Pub is located in the sub-soi on Sukhumvit, Soi 11. The friendly English owner Nick says that all are welcome. Check it out!

ARSENAL VS MANCHESTER UNITED LIVE IN CHEQUERS PUB BANGKOK

Nick from Chequers Pub in Soi Nana reminded me about the BIG ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALL MATCH TONIGHT. You can watch this important footy game in Chequers Pub (among many other venues). The result of this game could be instrumental at the close of the season. Both teams need to win! Chequers Pub have two 40″ Plasma TV screens for better viewing. The BIG footy match kicks off at 7:45pm. Come on you reds! All together lads, “Glory, glory Man United.”

SOI COWBOY — WALK ON THE WILD WEST SIDE

MIDNITE GO-GO BAR, SOI COWBOY
MIDNITE GO-GO BAR, SOI COWBOY

If you have not visited Little Las Vegas in a while, I think you should. Soi Cowboy has transformed itself from being rough ‘n’ ready to hot ‘n’ spicy. It certainly is HOT in this particular neon jungle. The lack of attire is most evident. Recently, I enjoyed a visit to Midnite Go-Go Bar. Midnite operates to a different format; there are dance shows every 5 minutes during Showtime (10:00pm-1:00am). This is no exaggeration, because the go-go girls only dance for one song before a show comes back on again. This obviously involves a lot of ascending and descending the go-go stage, but it keeps the crowd entertained. Sanook Shaun, who is incidentally, a living legend in the Thailand nightlife scene, suggested that we visit Midnite Go-Go Bar. Being somewhat a sexpert in Hornythology (study of Thai dolly birds), it took me a split second to agree. The only problem is that it is a mad dash to get to the most attractive bar girls. Sanook Shaun always seems to be a few steps ahead. We clinked beer bottles and said, “Cheers!” Just then, Sanook Shaun recited an old Irish saying, “May you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you are dead.” That is when I realised that Sanook Shaun has the luck of the Irish.

Midnite Go-Go Bar is well worth a visit in my opinion. The bar was busy for a weekday. On the bar-ometer that is a clear indication that it has something special to offer. A good time to see gorgeous coyote dancers is in Midnite at midnight. From midnight until closing, a troupe of coyote dancers will mesmerise you every Friday and Saturday. Prices are on a higher level, but so is the talent. Don’t be shy give it a try!

AFTER DARK ASIA 2009 CALENDAR

After Dark Asia Go-Go Girly Magazine, proudly present their superb 2009 Calendar. In Bangkok, you can purchase them from Angelwitch in Nana Plaza. They cost a farang friendly 300 baht. There is a considerable difference between these Thai calendar models and Western models. These Thai dolly birds are oozing with Triple A Factor – Adorable, Available, Affordable. My mate Peter Stud commented, “It’s more like a catalogue than a calendar.”

DAVES RAVES — IT’S JUST NOT COOL MAN!

For those guys who are not living in Thailand, be aware that there is a prolonged rainy season this year. It is supposed to be the start of the cool season, but it is still raining heavily in certain regions. In addition, it can be very humid at night. It’s just not cool man! Certain parts of North Thailand are heavily flooded, so bear this in mind when planning your Thailand trip itinerary. The worst affected is Isaan, the Northeast region of Thailand. You might need to be aware of bar girls saying, “My buffalo drowned in the flood. My village same same Titanic. Mama, Papa no have money.”

NOTE THE QUOTE — BAR GIRL BANTER

You never lose your Thai bar girl, you just lose your turn. (Sexpat saying)
