NANA PLAZA – NEWS FROM THE NEON JUNGLE

There is a Birthday Bash at Pretty Lady Go-Go Bar this Friday, September 18th, for the manager Tukata. Pretty Lady offers a ‘free feeding frenzy’ and beers are only 100 baht all night. If you have lost your bearings, Pretty Lady is located on the ground level on the left-hand side, as you enter Nana Plaza. Apparently, there are also some exciting shows. You will be welcomed with open legs… Oops! I mean open arms.

NANA PLAZA BANGKOK (DAVE THE RAVE 2009)

There is good news for fans of Mandarin Go-Go Bar on the middle level in Nana Plaza. Recently, Mandarin had so many go-go girls that they were forced to open both levels on several nights. With a now higher level of Q Factor (a quantity of quality), Mandarin is well worth a pit stop on the go-go bar circuit. The only thing some guys don’t understand is why Mandarin never attracts more customers. I think it is due to the fact Mandarin is tucked away in a remote corner, and it does have a steep, uninviting staircase. I feel that these are probably two of the main reasons. For the uninitiated, you will find Mandarin Go-Go Bar straight ahead from the top of the escalator next to Mandarin Table Dance, which is the second Mandarin Bar.

SUPER SAVER – Mercury Go-Go Bar on the middle level in Nana Plaza (next to Mandarin Table Dance) offer Heineken, Singha, Chang and Thai whisky for just 90 baht all night.

CLOSING TIME – The bars in Nana Plaza continue to remain open until at least 2:00am. Also, note that a late nightcap is sometimes possible in the show ‘n’ go-go bars.

PATPONG – THE SOHO OF BANGKOK

Occasionally, a few people ask me how Patpong is doing these days, but they are becoming rapidly rarer. Although in saying that, some newcomers do visit Patpong. If you really must go to Patpong, it is most advisable to remain on the ground level. There are a number of dangerous go-go bars operated by violent thugs, which still exist today. The second level go-go bars continue to try to lure unsuspecting victims inside. Their claim is that you watched a sex show and you must pay the bill. The cost is extortionately higher than any bar in Soi Cowboy, or Nana Plaza put together. The answer is simple – don’t be the Patpong thugs’ next victim!

Patpong desperately needs to reinvent itself, but I doubt this will ever happen. I remember visiting Patpong in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, when Patpong was a force to be reckoned with. Nowadays, with the market being the main attraction, Patpong is barely even a shadow of its former self. Most resident expats are of the opinion, ‘why bother to waste your time and money in the Patpong go-go bars?’ Perhaps one of the only go-go bars worth visiting in Patpong is Club Electric Blue. I wish I could be more positive but sadly, for Patpong fans that is not possible.

SOI COWBOY – WELCOME TO LITTLE LAS VEGAS

Down in Soi Cowboy there are a few go-go bars in particular that I notice run excellent drinks deals. During ‘Crazy Hour’ Dollhouse Go-Go Bar offer standard drinks until 9:30pm for only 60 baht. Dollhouse still has some lovely young go-go dancers, but you must not arrive too late, or the selection of dolly birds is limited. Shark Go-Go Bar have a good promotion for the whole duration of Sunday nights. Shark offer tequila at a snip for just 70 baht a shot. Shark Bar, Tilac Bar and Country Road, all have great Happy Hours – standard drinks are just 70 baht. With some fantastic Happy Hours on offer in Soi Cowboy, it is a great place to start your evening.

CLOSING TIME – Down Soi Cowboy the closing time is a bit more relaxed and usually happens between 2:00am and 2:30am. If you are looking for a nightcap, Penny Black Bar (next to Raw Hide) stays open after 2:00am for several more hours.

WILD WEDNESDAYS IN THE LONDONER BREW PUB

The Londoner Brew Pub is a favourite oasis to a fair section of the local expat community in Bangkok. This English institution is renowned for the no nonsense approach to pub grub, its lively London pub atmosphere, and the fact that they brew their own draught beer. The Londoner is located on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 33 in the basement of the UBC II Building. For those that do not like big crowds, the Londoner can get very crowded, especially when the English Premiership Football matches are shown live. Therefore, it would be advisable to avoid these periods. Every week you can enjoy ‘Wild Wednesdays’ which means 2-4-1 on all standard drinks. The special drinks deal of ‘buy one get one free’ runs all day every Wednesday until closing time. This is one of the very best value-for-money drinks deals in Bangkok.

DOUBLE DERBY DAY IN LEGENDS SPORTS BAR

Football fans will be ecstatic about the forthcoming English Premier League ‘Double Derby Day’ on Sunday, September 20th. First up is Manchester United VS Manchester City at 7:30pm and then, it is Chelsea VS Spurs at 10:00pm. Legends Sports Bar in Sukhumvit Soi 33 are generously providing a ‘free feeding frenzy’ for everyone who attends. Also, there is a free drink for footy fans who wear their favourite team shirt. That just leaves me to say, come on you red devils!

THAILAND TONIGHT – My bi-weekly Thailand nightlife column will be online every Wednesday and Sunday, (with the exception of unforeseen circumstances). Also, there will be additional posts from time to time. As always, thanks for your loyal support.

NOTE THE QUOTE – NO MONEY NO HONEY

Regarding the local guys in Pattaya, their version of ‘no money no honey’ is much more abrasive. The Pattaya hardcore say, “No cash no gash!”

EPILOGUE – HOW LOW WILL IT GO?

Traditionally, September is the worst month on the Thai calendar for the bar business. When you add this to a sharp fall in foreign arrivals, it is no wonder Thailand’s bars, pubs and clubs are quieter than expected. The biggest question is, “How low will it go?” One perceptive go-go bar owner previously made a prediction and said, “We will see some strange nights this September.” Unfortunately, for the bar trade in general, he is right. It is a scary rollercoaster ride this low season!

Until next time, thanks for tuning in!
